Facts: One in five American adults suffers from a diagnosable mental disorder. Studies show about 45 million and another 10 million children suffer from mental illness. Fewer than 20% of children, and 33% of adults with a diagnosable mental illness receive proffessional treatment. In 1999, the surgeon general estimated the direct business cost of a lack of mental health parity at $70 billion in absenteeism, lost productivity, and disability claims. It takes enormous courage to get up each day and to buoy oneself against the continual problems of mental illness.
