IsnÕt it beautiful what hands can do?

Objectives:

  1. Learn the concept and techniques behind shading.
  2. Practice drawing from observation.
  3. Combine the realism from anatomy of hand with surreal elements.
  4. Utilize elements of design by striving to construct interesting composition and value-shading.
  5. Become familiar with the work of M.C. Escher.
  6. Learn each othersÕ favorite past-time/hobby.

 

Materials:

  1. Instructional Powerpoint
  2. White drawing paper
  3. Pencils (colored pencils = optional)

 

Length of Time:  approximately 50 minutes

 

Procedure

Overall Description: 

Students will design a Òfantasy-scapeÓ that uses hands as the dominating subjects.  The drawing should portray the hands involved in an activity the student enjoys. 

 

Detailed Steps:

  1. View and contemplate selected works of M.C. Escher.
  2. Construct a surreal scene in which hands serve as focal points.
  3. Make sure the position of the hands as well as any added objects convey a favorite past-time or hobby.
